This is a piece of timeless writing, a classic of its kind. Its author, Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J. was an English Jesuit who was sent to India, as Archbishop of Bombay, in the critical days which followed the end of the 1914-18 war.
After seven years he resigned, returned to England and served for a time as an auxiliary bishop to Cardinal Bourne of Westminster He died in his seventieth year, in 1939.
He was a spiritual writer of scholarly attainments, simplicity and depth of devotion.
